Rwanda Alphonsine (2nd Prize in Nationwide Taste Contest)

Rwanda Alphonsine is paving the way for the future of the Helsinki Coffee Roastery's Take It/Leave It series. We're raising the bar higher than ever. Our goal is to offer unforgettable experiences to our customers.

This coffee won silver on April 12, 2025, at the Best Coffee competition held at the Helsinki Food Fair. What makes this competition special is that it was open to all roasteries, and the coffees were tasted completely blind. Moreover, extremely expensive specialties were excluded from the contest.

Now we say it loud and clear: Take it, don’t leave it!

The coffee was grown in Kabeza village central Rwanda on a coffee farm called Karibu Coffee established over 10 years ago. The farm grows Arabica coffee fertilized with compost, without the use of industrial fertilizers.

The name Alphonsine comes from the farm’s overseer. She organizes the farm’s management, coffee harvesting, and processing.

The coffee grows on a western slope at an altitude of 1,900 meters, less than 200 km from the equator. Banana plants and old, large avocado trees provide shade for the coffee bushes. The area is characterized by small family farms that produce high-quality but low-yield coffee.

The harvest was collected and processed by hand, dried in the sun, and the final sorting of the beans after husking was also done manually at a local coffee cooperative.

Available online only as 250 g bags a limited amount. At the café there might be 1 kg bags also. Of course four quarters make one kilo! The best before date is 6 months from the roast date.
